Centre for
Solid Waste Bioprocessing


The Centre for Solid Waste Bioprocessing has a dedicated Solid Waste Laboratory in the Advanced Engineering Building, located at The University of Queensland's St Lucia campus.

The Centre has a dedicated Solid Waste Laboratory in the new Advanced Engineering Building at UQ and fieldwork capability that include the following:

  • PC2 standard laboratory with rigorous risk management practices, including H2S, flammable gas sensors and alarms.
  • Four 200L temperature controlled bioreactors with on-line measurement of CH4 and CO2 production and O2 consumption.
  • Gas chromatography equipment, specifically a GC -FID, GC-TCD to measure CO2 and CH4 at the ppm range and the % range, and H2 and O2 at the % range.
  • Walk-in refrigerator and walk-in freezer
  • Constant temperature room.
  • Reticulated gases to the laboratory including H2, argon, N2 and CH4 for analyses and experimentation
  • High ventilation rate.
  • Four 5L temperature-controlled bench-scale CSTRs.
  • Incubators, furnace and drying oven.
  • Fumehood, laminar flow hood and a 4 m x 1.2 m hood for large scale experiments.
  • Landfill gas sampling equipment, specifically 8 static chambers and spear sets, on-site biogas sampling equipment including an EGM-4 gas analyser to measure CO2 with ppm accuracy.
